Trend Tracking Seminar 2008 - 1 September 2008 - Copenhagen Airport Hilton
This year´s seminar highlighted a wide range of interesting topics, such as general world economics, Russia´s forest industry, the pulp and paper sector, sustainability, customer experiences, market pulp, packaging, emerging trends in newsprint and magazines and uncoated woodfree markets.Speakers covered all sectors of the paper value chain and delivered insight information on the present situation as well as the prospects for the future.

The global economic slowdown has far reaching consequences, while almost all sectors of the industry suffer from increased energy, wood, pulp and raw materials cost in general.
As far as the market pulp sector is concerned, expensive softwood is increasingly being replaced more and more by cheaper hardwood and there is also geographical change in supply and demand. Pulp producers have to reconsider established business models and concentrate on responsible and profitable exposure to energy and biomass.
Global consumption and production capacity development of carton board shows a quite flat development in North America, while Western Europe is still expanding, altough export opportunities have been reduced dramatically due to Asia´s exports. Growth in Central and Eastern Europe is still strong and particularly Eastern Europe will be an key export destination for the industry in the future.
Another key issue is the development of coated woodfree, coated mechanical and uncoated mechanical paper sectors. The industry has been struggling with price7cost increases (energy, wood, pulp, paper), at a time of low consumer and business confidence and decreasing demands of all grades.
Emerging markets are still growing, especially Russia, Asia and Eastern Europe, with an impressive development in terms of exports, consumption and production capacity. They aspire to reduce their imports, focusing production more and more on domestic markets, as well as trying to strengthen their positions on the global market.
Newsprint companies are increasingly concentrating on their core business and have to implement new structures (online services, new delivery platforms) in their business models. As the internet becomes more important, companies have to leverage this medium to complement print media.
Russia is well on the way to strengthen its position on the global forestry market, supported by their substantial volume of forest resources and their growing opportunities. The government aspires to focus production increasingly on domestic markets and also to improve the investment climate for foreign investors.
Sustainability could create new business models for the whole paper industry, focusing on value creation opportunities and concrete actions. New integrations, new supply chain structures and relationships with waste management could be a potential approach.
Now is the right point in time to accept the challenges, rethink long-standing strategies and find innovative solutions.
